Roses cheaper than a pint

roll on June and the first flush of roses

Aldi are doing roses at the moment, some pretty gorgeous ones!! There are hybrid teas, hybrid perpetuals and climbers of different sizes. At €2.99 a pop its great value, left the bones of €30 there yesterday and walked away with some very highly recommended varieties. That experiment with the sweet peas is really after getting a boost! I have bought from them before and they have been really excellent. Last year they even sold potted David Austin roses, around May I think.

I know I said you can throw out the rules a lot of the time but one rule I try to abide by because it works so well is to plant one variety of rose in threes, fives, sevens or nines for impact. So if you go out to buy say Rosa "English miss", consider getting three of them and planting them a few feet from each other to get a really good show of flowers. In the summer it will look like one big plant covered in flowers. You'll get better perfume impact too. Roses without fragrance? really, whats the point?

roses and sweet peas, great together in the garden and as cut flowers
